MindSpark’s work with the Todd County School District, located on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota, focuses on transforming education through culturally relevant, problem-based learning (PBL). This area is home to a large portion of the Lakota Tribe and is one of the most underserved regions in the U.S., facing significant challenges such as high poverty rates and low life expectancy (20 years below the national average).

Over the past five years, MindSpark has collaborated with the Lakota community and local leaders to develop career pathways in agricultural technology and land stewardship, aligning education with cultural heritage and economic needs. Using MindSpark’s PBL approach, students gain practical skills while engaging in real-world problem-solving, making education more meaningful and connected to their lives.

MindSpark designed a multi-year professional development program for educators, facilitating 155 hours of PBL-based coaching and institutes to equip teachers with the tools needed to maximize student impact. This initiative has directly impacted 1,895 students and 75 educators, representing 95% of the Todd County student body. As a result of these efforts, 63% of participating students are now performing above the district average, helping close the achievement gap and creating new opportunities for future generations.

Through partnerships with local organizations like the Sicangu Community Development Corporation and tribal elders, MindSpark has ensured that these programs are sustainable and aligned with the community’s long-term goals of cultural preservation and workforce development.
